Flood waters damage homes and businesses
It only took about an hour and a half for flood waters to consume parts of Columbus Drive and 50th Street. Unfortunately, it happened at the heart of rush hour.
“I thought we’d make it through. I seen about a hundred cars drive through and so we were driving through too,” said James Reynolds.
However, his car did not make it through the three-foot waters and neither did several others.
“I thought my car was gonna to drown back there,” said Lisa Wendel.
Her car made it through the water, but she didn't make it to work at UPS. About nine feet of water seeped into their building and employees were forced to put together packages outside.
“It’s a disaster,” said Velma Rivera, whose house was damaged by the flood.
Rivera has lived near 60th Street and Broadway Avenue for the past four years.
“It did, it came up real quick,” she said.
She spent the afternoon trying to clean up the mess.
“Everything smells like sewer,” she said, "Looks like an all night job."
Total Pro-Shop, a nearby business which puts together countertops, was also flooded.
“The water just kept on rising and rising and within half an hour we were in two three feet of water,” said Daniele Swidersky, who witnessed the water come rushing into the small work space.
Fortunately, the storms are expected to clear up for the weekend. However, instead of enjoying the beautiful weather, some folks will still be cleaning up from the storms.
“Just repair what we can. Hope the sun comes out for a few days,” said Rivera.
